With over two decades of experience at the helm of some of South Africa’s leading healthcare institutions, Patrick Masobe, CEO of KeyHealth Medical Scheme, brings a deep understanding of the country’s healthcare landscape – and a clear vision for its
future.
The South African medical schemes industry has undergone significant transformation over the past two decades,” Masobe says. “The pace of change has accelerated, driven by shifting member demographics, rapid technological advancements, and increasing pressure on the supply side – especially the availability of specialists.”
Against this backdrop, Masobe has steered KeyHealth toward a strategic mission: to deliver real value to members through innovation, preventative care, and operational excellence.
A Preventative Approach to Member Health
At the heart of KeyHealth’s strategy is a shift away from reactive treatment to proactive, member-focused health management.
“We focus on keeping our members healthy through wellness initiatives and preventative care,” Masobe explains. “By providing robust support through our managed healthcare teams, we aim to reduce hospital admissions and readmissions. These interventions help lower healthcare costs while maintaining high standards of care.”
From Global Classrooms to Local Impact
Masobe credits his academic journey—including time at UC Berkeley and the London Business School—for shaping his perspective as a leader in South Africa’s complex healthcare sector.
“My international education broadened my worldview and reinforced the importance of humility and preparation,” he shares. “I’ve learned that there’s an immense amount of global knowledge that we often don’t leverage. My goal has always been to bring that insight back and apply it locally in meaningful ways.”
Tackling South Africa’s Systemic Health Challenges
Asked about the most pressing issues facing South Africa’s healthcare system, Masobe is candid:
“We’re dealing with inadequate public funding, unequal access to care, and a shortage of healthcare professionals,” he says. “Private medical schemes like KeyHealth have a crucial role to play. We can partner with government to support universal health coverage and offer innovative solutions to make healthcare more affordable and efficient.”
Fostering Agility and Resilience in Leadership
Masobe believes that strong leadership isn’t only about bold decisions—it’s about mentoring and empowering others to grow.
“I spend time coaching my executives, understanding each person’s style and helping them navigate their leadership journey,” he says. “I really connect with Michael Porter’s idea that ‘the best CEOs are teachers.’ Strategy is something I actively teach – especially how to stay focused on our customers.”
This mentorship-driven leadership style, he says, is essential in building resilient, agile teams who can adapt to the demands of an evolving healthcare landscape.
Qualities for the Next Generation of Leaders
Looking to the future, Masobe is optimistic about the talent emerging in South Africa’s healthcare sector – but he also emphasizes the attributes that will matter most.
Adaptability, empathy, strategic thinking, and a hunger to keep learning—these are non- negotiables,” he says. “We also need leaders who are exceptional communicators and collaborators, capable of navigating complexity while inspiring innovation.
Strengthening Governance and Accountability
His extensive boardroom experience has shaped Masobe’s philosophy on governance and risk management.
Serving on various boards taught me the importance of transparency, accountability, and strategic oversight,” he notes. “Clear lines between what’s a board decision versus what’s for management are essential. This structure ensures that KeyHealth operates with integrity and mitigates risks effectively.
Defining Success Through Impact
Masobe’s definition of success goes beyond financial metrics.
“I measure success by the positive impact I have on others and on the organisation,” he says. “As a leader, it’s about the growth of my team and the satisfaction of our members. As a strategist, I look at performance and long-term sustainability. And as a mentor, it’s about seeing those I’ve guided thrive.”
A Legacy of Fairness and Access
Masobe remains deeply committed to shaping a healthcare system that serves future generations with greater fairness.
