Preventive Care Benefits

These benefits aim to help beneficiaries stay healthy and avoid diseases and hospitalisation. They include vaccinations and medication.

Flu vaccination
  • Beneficiaries: All beneficiaries.
  • Frequency: February to June.
COVID-19 vaccination plus Booster
  • Beneficiaries: All beneficiaries.
Tetanus injection
  • Beneficiaries: All beneficiaries.
  • Frequency: As and when required.
Pneumococcal vaccination (Prevenar not included)
  • Beneficiaries: All beneficiaries.
Malaria medication to the value of R460
  • Beneficiaries: All beneficiaries.
  • Frequency: 1 per year.
Contraceptive medication: Tablets / patches (R185)​
  • Beneficiaries: Female beneficiaries older than 16 years
  • Frequency: Every 20 days.

Contraceptive medication: Injectables (R285)
  • Beneficiaries: Female beneficiaries older than 16 years
  • Frequency: Every 72 days.

Early Detection Tests

These benefits aim to identify diseases before they become serious; thereby allowing for early treatment. These include cancer, HIV / AIDS, and other tests.

Pap smear (Pathologist)
  • Beneficiaries: Female older than 15 years.
  • Frequency: 1 per year.
Pap smear (including consultation and pelvic organs ultrasound; GP or Gynaecologist)
  • Beneficiaries: Female older than 15 years.
  • Frequency: 1 per year.
Mammogram
  • Beneficiaries: Female beneficiaries older than 40 years.
  • Frequency: 1 per year.
Prostate specific antigen (PSA) (pathologist)
  • Beneficiaries: Male beneficiaries older than 40 years
  • Frequency: 1 per year.
Stool test for colon cancer
  • Beneficiaries: Beneficiaries aged 50-75 years.
  • Frequency: 1 per year.

  • Frequency: 1 per year.
Health Assessment (HA)

Body mass index, blood pressure measurement, cholesterol test (finger prick), blood sugar test (finger prick), PSA (finger prick).

  • Beneficiaries: All beneficiaries.
  • Frequency: 1 per year.

Weight Loss Programme

These benefits aim to assist those beneficiaries whose weight is above the recommended body mass. 

This benefit is not available on Essence and Origin options.

Weight Loss Programme excluding Origin and Essence Options

Beneficiaries: Beneficiaries with a body mass index (BMI) higher than 30.

Frequency:

  • 3 dietician consultations (1 per month)*.
  • 1 biokineticist consultation (to create a home exercise programme for the member).
  • 3 additional dietician consultations (1 per month, provided that the Scheme received a weight loss chart from the dietician that proves weight loss after the first 3 months)*.
  • 1 follow-up consultation with biokineticist.

*Pre-authorisation required and subject to the use of DSPs.

Maternity Programme

These benefits aim to ensure that the mother-to-be has access to the best healthcare, including information and treatments, during her pregnancy.

Ante-natal visits (GP, gynecologist, or midwife) and urine test (dipstick)
  • Beneficiaries: Female beneficiaries.
  • Frequency: 12 visits.
Ultrasounds (scans) (GP or gynaecologist)*
  • Beneficiaries: Female beneficiaries.
  • Frequency: 2 pregnancy ultrasounds (scans) (one before the 24th week and one thereafter)#. 

*Pre-notification of and pre-authorisation by the Scheme are compulsory.

Short payments / co-payments for services rendered (# above) and birthing fees

Covered to the value of R1 440 per pregnancy.

Ante-natal vitamins

Covered to the value of R2 440 per pregnancy.

Ante-natal classes

Covered to the value of R2 440 for the first pregnancy.

Child Booster Benefits

Child Booster Benefits

An additional benefit for preventive care and early detection tests available for infants from birth until seven years at no extra cost. This enhanced Child Booster benefit is available for the Silver, Equilibrium and Origin options.

Child immunisation

 Child Dependants aged ≤6 – as required by the Department of Health.

HPV vaccination
  • Beneficiaries: Female beneficiaries aged 9-14.
  • Frequency: 2 doses per lifetime. 

*Excluding Essence.

Child growth assessments
  • 3 baby growth assessments per year at a pharmacy/baby clinic for beneficiaries aged 0-7 years.
    (Silver, Equilibrium and Origin options only).
  • 3 baby growth assessments per year at a pharmacy/baby clinic for beneficiaries aged 0-35 months.
    (Platinum and Gold options only).
Pediatrician visits
  • Beneficiaries: Baby registered on the Scheme.
  • Frequency: 2 visits in baby’s 1st year, 1 visit in baby’s 2nd year.
Hearing screening test
  • Beneficiaries: Newborns aged 0-8 weeks.
  • Frequency: Once.
    (Silver, Equilibrium, and Origin options only).
Eye test
  • Beneficiaries: Child Dependants aged 0-7 years.
  • Frequency: Once.
    (Silver, Equilibrium and Origin options only).

Important information

  • No pre-authorisation is required for screening tests and other preventative care benefits.
  • Pre-authorisation is required to access the maternity and weight loss benefits on Health Booster.
